EOD TRUCK – THE NEW CONCEPT OF VEHICLE FOR EOD PATROL

1. INTRODUCTION

The sapper hazardous material transport vehicle is equipped with an anti-shrapnel, ventilated container intended for the safe transport of medium-sized unexploded ordnance and ammunition of the equivalent of 10 kg of pure TNT collected by military terrain-clearing patrols or other engineer sub-units in conformity with the regulations in force. It may also be used at airports, ferry terminals and automatic sorting offices for the rapid isolation of suspicious packages, letters or baggage potentially containing explosive materials. It protects individuals and surroundings effectively against the effect of shrapnel in the event of an uncontrolled explosion of unexploded ordnance, misfired ammunition or other hazardous explosive material being transported within the container. The military nature of the vehicle allows its transportation by air as well as rail.

3. EQUIPMENT BODY:

Between the container for unexploded ordnance and the crew cabin there is an equipment section. The structure of equipment body is based on the supporting frame enabling in-field movement of the vehicle.

The structure is made of welded covered with anodized albumen plates. The external surface of the body is made in semi-mat RAL6000 while the internal surface is in natural anodized aluminium. The body has thermal insulation (floor, walls and roof) which protects equipment (optics) transported in extreme weather conditions (-30°/+50°). In case of winter conditions, the body has an independent heating system ensuring constant positive temperature. In case of hot conditions, the vehicle is equipped with ventilation system ensuring continuous exchange of air in the body.

The equipment is accessed by aluminium curtains on both sides of the vehicle.

4. LIGHTING:

a) pneumatic light mast

Mounted on the body, pneumatically operated; controlled by wired control – enables appropriate lighting of the area around the vehicle and enables work under limited visibility. This device is powered by the portable power generator.

b) remotely adjustable spot light mounted on the vehicle roof

When moving after dawn in field it enables lighting of roadsides or obstacles. The device is powered by vehicle batteries.

c) Work Area Light

It is located directly on the body of the vehicle in order to light work area around the vehicle. It is beneficiary in case the crew is packing or unpacking the vehicle or is working in the direct vicinity. The device is powered by vehicle batteries.

d) Light inside the body

It is mounted inside the body; it makes it easier to draw/put the equipment inside/out of the body using appropriate mounts in case of limited visibility. The device is powered by vehicle batteries.

e) Portable light

These are portable light masts with the height of about 2.5m with mobile light towers of 500 W; they enable work far from the vehicle or positioning of the light directly over work area.

The vehicle has different lighting system depending on the needs:

The container is equipped with the driving gear for steering the cover closing the loading space and the special conveyor belt with the driving gear for moving the loading bed/shelf in and out of the container.

On the frame of the superstructure the steering/control box is installed with the main switch. The driving steering system is installed inside.

There is also control panel installed inside the steering box which is connected by the wires (coiled on the cylinder) with the steering system. Owing to the wires (25m long) it is possible to operate the container remotely guaranteeing the safety of the operators. On the frame there is the manual winch installed for lifting the platform for transport and lowering the platform for loading the item. superstructure is equipped with the electric installation adjusted to be powered by the vehicle (24 V).

There is the tool box installed on the front part of the superstructure frame with the basic tools necessary for operation and maintenance activities.

The vessel should be operated by two persons.

Intended use of the container:

Fragmentation safe ventilated container is intended for safe transport of medium unexploded ordnance with the coefficient of up to pure TNT, disposed by military EOD patrols or other engineering troops according to applicable regulations. It may also be used in airports, ferry terminals and in automatic mail sorting plants in order to isolate suspicious parcels, letter or luggage which may contain explosives.
It protects people and surrounding against fragmentations in case of accidental explosion of unexploded ordnance or other materials containing explosives transported inside the container.

Description and equipment:

Fragmentation safe ventilated container is equipped with a drive lifting up and down the loading window as well as with a special belt conveyor with a drive for putting it forward and backward into the container. In the control cabinet with a main circuit breaker there is a control system for container drives. In the control cabinet there is also practical and simple control device (desk) which is connected by way of wires rolled up on the reel with the control system. After unrolling the wires, it is possible to perform operations on the container from the distance ensuring safety.

Access to the container is via a remotely controlled lift which lifts the sapper in pyrotechnic suit as well as the pyrotechnic robot in order to place the ordnance in the container.

6. SELF-EVACUATION WINCH:

In the front of the vehicle there is a winch for self-evacuation with the towing force of 7000 kg (basic set of components) and length of line - 30 m. Location of the winch enables access to factory towing holders in the chassis and the galvanized basis ensures long-term anti-corrosion protection.

7. AUTONOMY:

The vehicle is assumed to be as much independent as possible and to minimize necessary means of transport in order to carry out long-term operations; thus, the vehicle may be equipped with social facilities consisting of:
- 25-l water container with dosage system
- liquid anti-bacterial agent dosing system
- holder for industrial toilet paper
- portable fridge
- fold-out table to prepare food
- electric kettle

- portable fold-out chairs
- picnic dish kit

In case of unfavourable weather conditions, the vehicle may be equipped with working tents along the vehicle with total area of 20m˛.
